Jan. 8, 2003. GENETICS Project sponsors curriculum development workshop for science educators
The UW GENETICS Project, together with the University of Utah Genetic Science Learning Center and the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, was awarded a $50,000 mini-grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to organize and present a weeklong curriculum development workshop for K-12 science educators.

The workshop will take place in Salt Lake City from January 12-17, 2003, and will feature presentations from noted experts on science curriculum development, including speakers from the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, the Understanding by Design group, and the GEMS/SEPUP team from University of California's Lawrence Hall of Science. Forty educators from HHMI funded outreach programs at universities, research institutes, and museums from around the country will participate.

June 3, 2002. Summer professional development workshops for teachers set
Genome Sciences Education Outreach will welcome teachers onto campus this summer for 3 professional development workshops on Genetics and Biotechnology.

The first workshop, for 20 teachers of grades 5-8, will be held in June and include 3 days of genetics presented by GENETICS Project staff within the context of a longer institute on Life Science offered by the Department of Biology. The second workshop on DNA Sequencing and Bioethics for high school teachers is organized by the High School Human Genome Program, will take place July 15-19, and will attract 30 participants from across the country. The third workshop, Inquiry Genetics Teaching for High School Teachers, is also presented by the GENETICS Project, will occur August 5-9, and serve 25 teachers from throughout Washington state.
